Rdale Roundup (Story 3): Understanding the compensatory funding error

In planning for the 2024-25 school year, the School Board approved $17.4 million in budget reductions. However, during the staffing implementation process, compensatory funding was mistakenly counted a second time. As a result, only about $3.2 million in reductions were actually implemented. This issue is often referred to by community members as the district’s “$20 million budget error” in 2024-25.

Simply put, the district spent approximately $14.2 million on staffing and programming that year that it did not intend to spend and could not sustainably afford. Additional inflationary increases created a projected $21 million deficit heading into the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Because of this error:

  • Many planned school-level budget reductions were not implemented
  • Schools retained staffing and resources for an additional year
  • The district overestimated available revenue

We want to be clear:

  • No money was missing
  • No funds were stolen or misused
  • The district continues to undergo required independent financial audits

This error should never have happened, and the district takes it seriously. District leadership has since implemented additional review processes and safeguards designed to help prevent similar issues in the future.

While this error accelerated the district’s current fiscal crisis and entry into Statutory Operating Debt (SOD), district leaders noted that long-term enrollment declines, rising operational costs, and aging facilities had already placed Rdale on an unsustainable financial trajectory over time.
